To make a day of it

Château de la Chèze stands in Latillé (Vienne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

La Chèze occupies a lordship documented since the Middle Ages, though its present buildings date from the 17th century. The property spans two communes, Latillé and Chiré-en-Montreuil. Its interest lies equally in the château itself, its outbuildings and orangery, and in its extensive grounds: the latter underwent several transformations, from the original French formal garden with terraces to an English-style park created around 1860 by a Parisian landscape architect, then enlarged in 1890. A pond dating from 1895, fed by a Bollée hydraulic system, completes the ensemble on the garden side.

What to know

  • The site is protected as a historical monument: the château, its outbuildings and orangery since 1985, then the entire grounds since 2005.
  • The park extends across both Latillé and Chiré-en-Montreuil, including boundary walls, decorative structures, the gatekeeper's lodge and other architectural features.
  • Successive landscape transformations (French then English style) and 19th-century hydraulic installations are the principal points of interest.
