To make a day of it

Château de la Bâtie stands in Montceaux (Ain), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 16th century, 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In the Dombes region, the château de la Bâtie has stood in red brick since the late 13th or early 14th century, the remnant of a stronghold that once had four enclosures and nineteen towers. Its keep still holds painted beams from the 16th century, including a danse macabre scene, while a vaulted gallery from the same period conceals older Gothic features. A private residence that passed through several families since the Middle Ages, the site also sheltered resistance fighters during the Second World War, among them Jean Moulin. The castle chapel, which contains a crypt, completes this protected historic ensemble.
