In the countryside of northern Dordogne, between Verteillac and La Tour-Blanche, the ruins of Jovelle castle rise out of the vegetation that now covers much of the site. Built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, this fortified castle is said to have sheltered the Black Prince during the Hundred Years' War and later served as Charles VII's headquarters. What remains today includes sections of rampart enclosing the courtyard, a Romanesque chapel with an arrow slit and a twin Gothic window, and a seventeenth century well.
