To make a day of it

Perched on a rocky spur above the Allier river near Rauret, the ruins of the château de Jonchères once guarded the passage between the Velay and Gévaudan regions. Seat of one of the eighteen baronies of the Velay under the Ancien Régime, the site still shows a rectangular keep, a vaulted round tower and the remains of a residential wing altered in the 18th century. Visitors come for the medieval fortifications and the view over the valley from the spur.
