Its present appearance owes much to building work carried out in 1624, which gave it a defensive walkway, turrets and large stone-mullioned windows, followed by 18th-century alterations that softened its interior comfort. Visitors can see painted French-style ceilings and fine plasterwork in the ground-floor drawing room. The estate passed through the hands of the Sinzelles, Chastel and Malbec de Montjoc families.
