The ruins of the Hellering castle stand in the commune of Hombourg-Haut, in the Moselle department, within grounds now used as a horse farm. Built in the 13th century for the bishop of Metz, the stronghold was enlarged over time before being wrecked during later conflicts and largely pulled down in the 18th century. What survives, two towers pierced with arrow slits, a gate carved with angels and demons, and sections of defensive wall, reflects several overlapping building phases. A fire in 1918 left the site further exposed to decay and overgrowth.
