To make a day of it

Château de Gourdon stands in Gourdon (Alpes-Maritimes), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 15th century, 17th century, 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing at 758 metres above the village of Gourdon, this castle overlooks the Loup valley from a rocky outcrop that has been occupied since antiquity. The current foundations date back to the 12th century, when the counts of Provence built a border stronghold over the remains of an earlier 9th-century structure. Three round corner towers and a massive northern wall survive from that period, while the arcades and upper floor were added during rebuilding in the early 17th century. Visitors can see the paved courtyard with its well, the grand staircase, several rooms with fireplaces, and terraced gardens.
