To make a day of it

Palais de la Méditerranée stands in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 20th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the Promenade des Anglais, the Art Deco facade of the Palais de la Méditerranée is the sole survivor of the original casino, rescued from demolition at the last moment. Behind these two protected sections of wall now stands a luxury hotel and casino, rebuilt in the early 2000s in the spirit of the vanished building. Visitors come mainly for the architecture seen from the street and the sculpted facade, rather than for a heritage-style interior tour.

What to know

  • Only the main facade and one side facade are listed as historic monuments, the rest of the building being a recent reconstruction.
  • The site now operates as a working hotel and casino, not as a monument open for standard heritage tours.
  • The sculpted facade can be viewed freely from the Promenade des Anglais and rue du Congrès.
  • The original Art Deco interior is gone, sold at auction before the 1990 demolition.
