At Haute-Goulaine, near Nantes, this Renaissance castle built of tuffeau stone stands beside its marshland since the late 15th century. Raised for the Goulaine family and enlarged in the 17th century, it retains its main hall flanked by pavilions, its old fireplaces, and a closed courtyard bordered by a walled enclosure with a carriage gate, a remnant of a former keep. The estate has also long grown vines, with a vineyard recorded here since the 12th century.
