Dachstein a été désigné siège résidentiel des évêques de Strasbourg au 13e siècle. En 1214 est élevé un château, démoli en 1675. En 1572, l'évêque Jean de Mandescheid se fait construire une nouvelle résidence, occupée par les évêques jusqu'en 1718. Au 19e sièlce, agrandissements de style neo-Renaissance par la famille de Turckheim.
