To make a day of it

Château de Cult stands in Cult (Haute-Saône), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The château de Cult, standing southwest of the village in Haute-Saône, is a seventeenth-century building whose history is inscribed on its facades. Two eastern bays bear traces of its origins: one carved with the name Guil-Clerc and the date 1611, the other with the initials GC and the year 1618. The Clerc family, then influential in the region, left its mark on the place; Jean Clerc, notary general of Burgundy and castellan of Cult, embodied its importance before his death in 1631. The building took on new life in the nineteenth century, transformed into a country residence by the daughter of its then-owner, Doctor Rousseau de Choye.

What to know

  • The château has been listed as a historical monument since 1998, a protection that covers the main residential building.
  • A spiral staircase tower, pierced with gun ports, bears witness to the defensive features of the original structure.
  • The interior retains nineteenth-century elements: a stairwell decorated with false marbling and period woodwork.
  • The building, modified over the centuries, offers limited architectural interest in its overall structure.
