To make a day of it

Château de Cotteuges stands in Saint-Diéry (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 15th century, 18th century, 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Château de Cotteuges comprises two distinct ensembles: a 13th-century old castle flanked by round towers, of which only the north-east tower remains intact, and a 15th-century new castle built as a pleasure residence. The first preserves a barrel-vaulted hall characteristic of its period and a Gothic gatehouse tower with sculpted openings. The second underwent extensions and a chapel addition in the 18th century, then further expansion around 1830, enriched with spiral stairs, wainscoting and period fireplaces.

What to know

  • The estate has been listed as a historic monument since 2005, encompassing both castles as well as the boundary wall and domain latrines.
  • The old castle bears traces of 19th-century agricultural use, which damaged certain sections of its façades, although the interior structure survives.
  • The gatehouse tower of the old castle features sculpted Gothic openings and preserves a staircase located in overhang.
  • The new castle retains interior elements from various periods: 15th-century spiral stair, wainscoting, 18th-century fireplaces and compartmented floors.
  • The formal garden has disappeared, but trees planted in English style in 1862 still remain.
