In Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, only remnants of the medieval fortress survive, listed as a historic monument. Built in the early 11th century by Foulque Nerra to defend the Angevin border against Brittany, it was captured by Conan II of Brittany in 1066 before falling into ruin and reportedly being demolished on Richelieu's orders in the 17th century. Visitors mainly find traces of the old fortifications, notably on the rue du Théâtre, rather than a standing castle.
