What the French Ministry of Culture records
Le château est composé de deux éléments : la forteresse construite par Saint-Louis en 1230 et le château-résidence des ducs d'Anjou. La forteresse comporte 17 tours hautes d'une trentaine de mètres et larges de 18 mètres, construites dans une alternance de schiste et de tuffeau ; les murs ont été renforcés en 1592 par un épais rempart de terre ; chacune des portes était défendue par une double herse. A partir de 1360, le château, devenu résidence ducale, est transformé : logis royal, chapelle édifiés au début du 15e siècle, châtelet construit en 1450. En 1373, le duc Louis 1er d'Anjou commande une série de tapisseries ayant pour thème l'Apocalypse ; la série est probablement achevée en 1382.
