The Château d'Angers stands above the Maine river, enclosed within a 13th century fortress wall raised around 1230 under Saint Louis, its seventeen towers of schist and tuffeau rising close to thirty metres. Inside, the remains of a ducal residence survive, a lodge and chapel begun in the 14th century under the Dukes of Anjou and later extended under King René. The visit centres on the Apocalypse tapestry, commissioned in 1373 by Louis I of Anjou and finished roughly a decade later, one of the largest medieval tapestries still in existence. The ramparts give open views over the town and valley below.
