To make a day of it

Château de Bonnefontaine stands in Altwiller (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first quarter of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

The Château de Bonnefontaine stands in Altwiller, on a site occupied since the Neolithic era and known since 1603 for a spring with reputed curative properties. Built between 1818 and 1822 by Strasbourg architect Jean-Jacques Schuller for the banker Christophe Merian Hoffmann, it was meant to house a spa resort, laid out in a neoclassical Palladian style with a peristyle flanked by sphinxes and a hall with a gallery. Left unoccupied since 1926, the building now stands in ruins, having passed from the Schlumberger family to the Hoch family.
