The château de Bois-Préau stands in Rueil-Malmaison, within an English-style park once linked to the neighbouring Malmaison estate, of which it is now a museum annex. The present building, rebuilt in the 19th century, once belonged to Empress Joséphine and later to her son Prince Eugène, before passing through several owners. The sixteen-hectare park contains two-century-old trees, an ornamental pond and stream, and a statue of Joséphine among other sculptures. The museum devoted to Napoleon's captivity on Saint Helena and to the Napoleonic legend is currently closed for renovation work.
