To make a day of it

Château Rothschild stands in Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine), in the Île-de-France region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: third quarter of the 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Boulogne-Billancourt, the Rothschild château survives mainly as a ruin, glimpsed rather than toured, the remnant of a Louis XIV-style residence built for banker James de Rothschild between 1855 and 1861. The building, badly deteriorated after decades of neglect, retains none of its former grandeur or its once-celebrated Japanese garden. What remains open to visitors is part of the park, where the scale of the original thirty-hectare estate can still be sensed.

What to know

  • The château itself is in ruins and cannot be visited inside.
  • Only part of the park, now public land, remains open for walking.
  • The site has been a listed historic monument since 1997.
  • There are no opening hours or entrance fees, as it is not a monument open for paid visits.
  • Expect an outdoor visit and a walk through the park rather than an interior tour.
