To make a day of it
Château de Bioule stands in Bioule (Tarn-et-Garonne), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Bioule castle rises on the banks of the Aveyron, a 14th-century fortress built by the Cardaillac family after the village passed from the control of Moissac abbey. Two wings at right angles, flanked by round towers, form its defensive structure, dominated by a cylindrical tower topped with a small campanile. The main entrance passes beneath this tower through a monumental gateway. Inside, the Salle des Preux preserves 16th-century murals depicting the nine legendary heroes, while the northern chapel contains 14th-century frescoes recounting episodes from the life of Christ.
What to know
- The castle has been classified as a historical monument since 1991 and visits depend on access conditions determined by the owner.
- Two destruction campaigns, in 1346 by the Black Prince and later by Protestant forces, did not destroy the general structure of the building.
- The 16th-century murals in the Salle des Preux and the 14th-century frescoes in the chapel are among the main points of interest for an interior visit.
- The keep that once stood in the courtyard was demolished towards the end of the 19th century.
