In Les Mureaux, in the Yvelines department, the château de Bècheville is a Second Empire brick building erected between 1864 and 1875 to designs by architect Henri Parent. It replaced an earlier, more modest house bought in 1811 by Count Pierre Daru, whose son Napoléon Daru commissioned the present building. The writer Stendhal, a cousin of the family, stayed there and referred to the place under various pen names in his work. Owned by the town since 1953, the building now houses the municipal music conservatory.
