To make a day of it

Château d'Yville stands in Yville-sur-Seine (Seine-Maritime), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Yville Castle is an early 18th-century mansion built in dressed stone on the banks of the Seine, between Rouen and Le Havre. Constructed from 1708 and completed in the second half of the century, it exemplifies the style of pleasure houses with its central facade flanked by wings, Ionic columns, and refined sculptures on lateral pediments. The estate spans three communes and comprises, beyond the castle itself, an enclosed park with monumental perspectives lined with lime trees, outbuildings including a chapel, a game park with keeper's lodge, and the original farm.

What to know

  • The estate extends across land in three communes: Yville-sur-Seine, Mauny, and Barneville-sur-Seine.
  • The protected ensemble extends well beyond the castle itself: enclosed park, planted perspectives, outbuildings, chapel, game park, and farm.
  • The castle belonged to François Le Menu de La Noë, who acquired the land in 1708, then to Jean-Prosper Goujon de Gasville, intendant of Rouen, for whom engineer Jean-Jacques Martinet continued work from 1723 to 1735.
  • The site's composition aligns primary and secondary perspectives from the facade to the hillside, where a belvedere offered views over the Seine and surrounding landscape.
