To make a day of it

Château d'Entrevaux stands in Saint-Priest (Ardèche), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Built between two valleys close to Privas, Entrevaux castle is among the few seigneurial residences of the Vivarais region to survive in such complete condition. Its volcanic stone walls, 80 centimetres thick, and its four truncated towers recall the siege of Privas in 1629, when Cardinal Richelieu himself stayed there to direct operations against the Huguenots. Inside, the great Knights' Hall and the room where the cardinal lodged have come through the centuries largely unaltered, the sheer thickness of the walls having limited later changes.

Frequently asked

When was Entrevaux castle built?
Its present form dates mainly from the second quarter of the 17th century, though some historians have pointed to possible 12th century origins.
Why are the towers of the castle truncated?
After the fall of Privas in 1629, Richelieu ordered the castle's destruction; the order was not fully carried out, but the four towers were cut down.
What can visitors see inside?
The so called Richelieu room, the great Knights' Hall, and a vaulted dining room restored in the 18th century are among the preserved interiors.
Is Entrevaux castle a listed historic monument?
It has been registered, rather than fully classified, as a historic monument since a 1970 order covering the facades, roofs and two first floor rooms.
