To make a day of it

Château d'Avosnes stands in Avosnes (Côte-d'Or), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Avosnes castle unfolds across two separate sites a few hundred metres apart around the village. To the south stands the 16th-century outer courtyard, with a building pierced by ogee-arched openings and a square tower, while to the north rises the seigneurial residence, an L-shaped complex linked by a round turret housing a spiral staircase. The façades, roofs and watch-turrets suggest a defensive architecture that was more symbolic than truly fortified, given a site poorly suited to defence.
