Overlooking the Toulourenc valley, Aulan castle stands on a spur first fortified in the 12th century, later reshaped through the 16th century. Looted during the French Revolution and damaged again during the First World War, it owes its present appearance to a restoration begun in the 1930s by the Harouard de Suarez d'Aulan family, who still own it today. Among its contents is a wooden pietà of Catalan origin dating from the 15th or 16th century, and the place carries a literary echo through the writings of Jean Giono and René Char, who both referred to it in their work.
