To make a day of it

Château de Chamaret stands in Chamaret (Drôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century). Adult admission costs 3 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Perched on a rocky outcrop above the Valréas plain, the ruins of Chamaret castle recall a fortress built in the 12th century by the local Chamaret family. Two ruined defensive walls, two residential wings and a thirty-metre square tower remain on the site, which may have originated as a Roman watchtower. The tower, restored in the late 19th century thanks to a bequest from a villager, can be visited and gives views over the surrounding hills.
