Le château est, dans les défenses du roi de Bourges sur la Loire, l'un des derniers restes du système et le seul vestige présentant un caractère homogène. L'édifice se présente comme un rectangle entouré d'eau, percé d'une porte avec pont-levis (disparu), échauguettes et mâchicoulis. L'appentis des dépendances est coiffé par un chemin de ronde, couvert d'une charpente. La tour-porche, contenant la salle des gardes, comprend échauguettes et tourelles. Le logis conserve une cave voûtée.
