The episcopal palace of Saint-Papoul, built from the 14th century onwards, stands on the site of former convent buildings adapted to house the bishops of a diocese established in 1317. Rebuilt and enlarged from the 15th to 18th centuries, notably by the addition of a large south wing in classical style, it preserves beneath its later modifications the traces of medieval construction still visible in its blocked openings and defensive features. The building traces the successive transformations of an abbatial site, from its episcopal residential function to its uses following the Revolution.
What to know
- The building combines flamboyant Gothic elements from the 15th century with 18th-century interior decoration, including plasterwork and marble fireplaces.
- The four diaphragm arches on the ground floor, dated 1767, mark a structural reinforcement campaign undertaken in the modern period.
- The palace sits directly against the southern gallery of the abbey's cloister and forms a distinct architectural unit separate from the convent buildings.
- Remains of three circular towers at the corners of the medieval structure survive in part, incorporated into later masonry.

Frequently asked
- What remains of the original medieval building?
- Beneath the reconstructions of the 15th and 18th centuries, several 14th-15th century elements survive: defensive slots, flamboyant windows, blocked openings, and traces of three circular towers at the corners.
- When did the palace cease its episcopal function?
- The diocese was suppressed at the Revolution. The abbey church became a parish church and the palace was sold privately, ending its role as an episcopal residence.
- How does the modern building differ from the earlier structure?
- The large southern wing, built in the late 18th century, stood independently from the medieval palace. It comprises a central body with two side wings and interiors decorated with plasterwork and marble fireplaces.
