To make a day of it

Manoir de Cléronde stands in Blay (Calvados), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the Bessin countryside, set apart from the village of Blay, the Cléronde manor stands by a pond at the edge of the Gruchy woods. Built in the mid 17th century for René de Fromont, it combines a plain main block with a taller corner tower dated 1639, which contains a monumental staircase. Inside, a painted fresco on a fireplace shows a rare figurative and heraldic decoration. The old farm buildings, including a dovecote, still frame the courtyard.

What to know

  • The manor is a private property, set in open countryside a few kilometres from the village of Blay.
  • As no opening hours or admission fees are confirmed, visitors should check locally before travelling.
  • The site has been a listed historic monument since 1929, covering the whole manor.
  • The building suffered damage during the fighting of June 1944 in the nearby Gruchy woods.
  • Access is in a rural setting, beside a pond and at the edge of woodland, so a car is needed.
