To make a day of it

La Fosse Hingant stands in Saint-Coulomb (Ille-et-Vilaine), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, fourth quarter of the 18th century, first half of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Saint-Coulomb, the malouinière of La Fosse Hingant belongs to that distinctive style of manor built by wealthy shipowners from Saint-Malo in the 17th century. The main house, altered during the Restoration with an added front section, still shows its original six-bay layout, an unusual feature for this type of residence. The grounds also include a chapel dated 1781, a dovecote, and a billiard room shaped like a small classical temple at the far end of the enclosed park. The estate is chiefly remembered as the centre of the La Rouërie conspiracy during the Chouannerie uprising.

Written from Malouinière de la Fosse-Hingant
