What the French Ministry of Culture records

Ancien château appartenant aux descendants de Fouché, duc d'Otrante, racheté par James de Rothschild en 1829. Démoli, puis reconstruit de 1856 à 1863 par l'architecte-jardinier-paysagiste Joseph Paxton dans le style de la Renaissance italienne (c'est la seule réalisation de Paxton en France). Plan quadrangulaire cantonné de tours carrées autour d'un immense hall procurant un éclairage zénithal. Décoration intérieure réalisée par le peintre Eugène Lami jusqu'en 1890 avec d'autres artistes, comme Charles Cordier, Gabriel Thomas, Alexandre Schoenewerk, Saint-Marceaux... Alignements du parc réalisés par Paxton. En 1862, un séquoia géant est planté dans le parc lors de la visite de Napoléon III. En 1959, après l'occupation par les Allemands pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, le château est remis en état par Guy de Rothschild. En 1975, le domaine est confié à la Chancellerie des Universités de Paris et devient un lieu de rencontres universitaires et de colloques. Une donation à la commune est faite en décembre 2012.
