To make a day of it

Château de Guermantes stands in Guermantes (Seine-et-Marne), in the Île-de-France region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, 18th century, 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Guermantes stands in Seine-et-Marne, built in the 17th century by the Viole family and later substantially reworked by Paulin Pondre, who called on Jules Hardouin-Mansart for the entrance steps and André Le Nôtre for the garden with its large ornamental water mirror. Its name inspired Marcel Proust for the Duke and Duchess de Guermantes in In Search of Lost Time, though the estate itself is never mentioned in the novel. The 31-metre-long gallery, with its wood panelling, painted canvases and chandeliers, remains the building's most striking feature, recalling the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
