Domaine situé sur une ancienne ligne frontalière entre le Poitou et la Saintonge. Il s'agit d'un très ancien site stratégique, peut-être dès l'époque romaine, mais sûrement au Moyen-âge comme l'atteste la motte présente dans le parc. Le fief de Lens est nommé dans une charte dès 936. Le château, construit vers le milieu du 18e siècle, présente une architecture classique avec ses pavillons d'angle carrés et ses façades principales à fronton, parfaitement symétriques. L'intérieur semble avoir été réaménagé au 19e siècle (papier peint à "chinoiseries", cheminées pour poële...). Ce logis est implanté dans un quadrilatère sceint par endroit de douves, qui contient également les communs dont un rare moulin du 18e siècle, le parc et les jardins. Autour du château, ces derniers sont à la française. L'organisation s'effectue selon douze carrés et se matérialise par des allées se coupant à angle droit. Plus au nord se trouvent l'ancienne charmille et le parc à l'anglaise. Cette composition est attestée au 19e siècle mais remonte probablement au 18e siècle, du moins en partie.
