To make a day of it

Wilgartaburg stands in Wilgartswiesen (Landkreis Südwestpfalz), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wilgartaburg, also known as the «Altes Schloß», stands in ruins on the northern edge of the valley between Wilgartswiesen and Rinnthal, in Rhineland-Palatinate. No written record fixes its exact origin, but historians rank it among the oldest strongholds in the Palatinate, likely built by the Hornbach abbey or its bailiffs as early as the beginning of the 11th century to guard the Pirmansland. A local legend tells that Countess Wiligarta spent her final years there in penance, atoning for the excesses of her late husband. What remains today is a ruin, maintained by a local hiking association from Wilgartswiesen.
