To make a day of it

Wasserburg Eschelbronn stands in Eschelbronn (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserburg Eschelbronn no longer stands above ground: the site is now marked by the Eschelbronn Schlosssee, a pond created where archaeological excavations once took place. Over eight centuries, several successive strongholds occupied the spot, first built in timber and later in stone, before the last structure fell into decay after 1676. Excavations carried out between 1971 and 1975 by the Baden-Württemberg heritage authority uncovered an exceptionally detailed stratigraphy, which later informed the reconstruction of the Bachritterburg at Kanzach.

What to know

  • No standing structure of the Wasserburg remains: the site is now the Eschelbronn Schlosssee, a pond.
  • A visit amounts to a walk around the water, since no castle building survives to be toured.
  • Everything known about the stronghold comes from the archaeological excavations carried out in the 1970s.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or access conditions, as this is an open-air site without a preserved building.
