To make a day of it

Wallburg Pöhlde stands in Pöhlde (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Wallburg Pöhlde is a former earth and stone fortification set on the wooded ridge of the Rotenberg above the village of Pöhlde. The site consists of two distinct enclosures, a large oval outer bailey and a smaller, roughly circular inner stronghold inserted into it at a later stage, connected by a substantial pincer gate. Excavations carried out between 1934 and 1974 uncovered walls, ditches, and gate remains dating from the 9th to the 12th century, though no evidence of permanent settlement was found inside. According to legend, it was here that Henry the Fowler learned in 919 that he had been elected king of East Francia, though archaeologists consider it unlikely that this was an actual royal residence.

  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as the site is a freely accessible natural and archaeological area.
  • The visit suits those who enjoy subtle traces in a woodland setting rather than a restored monument.
