To make a day of it
Burg Gieboldehausen stands in Gieboldehausen (Landkreis Göttingen), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Gieboldehausen no longer stands: it was a medieval lowland stronghold built on marshy ground beside the Rhume river, and its circular footprint, roughly seventy metres across, can still be traced in the layout of the village. Repeatedly damaged and rebuilt during the conflicts between the bishops of Hildesheim and the dukes of Brunswick, and later wrecked during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was finally torn down in the early nineteenth century. Because the site was never heavily redeveloped afterwards, the round outline of the former stronghold remains visible within the village plan.
What to know
- No standing remains of the castle survive; only the round shape of the plot can still be made out within the village.
- The site lies at the northern edge of the historic centre of Gieboldehausen, in the Rhume river lowland.
- A nineteenth-century administrative building now occupies the former castle grounds.
- A visit amounts to a walk through the village to trace the outline of the site rather than to see an actual building.
