To make a day of it

Turmhügel Schlössleshöppel stands in Hirschaid (Landkreis Bamberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Turmhügel Schlössleshöppel is what remains of a medieval motte, lying roughly 800 metres southeast of Großbuchfeld, a district of the municipality of Hirschaid in the Landkreis Bamberg, Bavaria. All that survives is an earthen mound, circular in shape, about 20 metres across and some 2.5 metres high, with a ditch 12 to 15 metres wide running along its northwestern edge. Levelling work carried out around 1930, which cut the mound down by half its original height, is said to have uncovered bricks and fragments of stove tiles, though their whereabouts are now unknown. There is no standing structure here, only an open-air earthwork marking the site of a former fortification.

What to know

  • There is no standing building: only an earthen mound surrounded by a ditch marks the former motte.
  • The site lies in open countryside near the Tappenbach stream, south of the Falzbrunnen spring, and is reached on foot.
  • No opening hours or admission fee apply, as this is an open, freely accessible outdoor site.
  • The surrounding ground can be marshy in places, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • The site is protected as a Bodendenkmal and should be viewed without digging or removing anything.
