To make a day of it
Festung Forchheim stands in Forchheim (Landkreis Forchheim), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Festung Forchheim is a former town fortification begun in 1553 by the Bishopric of Bamberg, after the town's occupation during the Second Margrave War. About a third of the original works survive today, woven into the town's green spaces. Visitors can see several well-preserved Italian-style bastions, especially on the north and northwest sides, along with curtain walls and gates dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It stands as one of the more complete surviving examples of an early modern bastioned town enclosure in Bavaria.

What to know
- The site is visited freely and outdoors, following the old moats that have been turned into a town park.
- The best-preserved sections lie on the north and northwest sides of the town, less interrupted by later road cuts.
- There are no set opening hours or fees, since this is an open urban site rather than an enclosed monument.
- Walking between the different bastions covers several hundred metres through the town and its surroundings.
- The fortress works pair easily with a visit to Forchheim's historic centre and its former Pfalz.
