To make a day of it

Trutzburg stands in Schleiden (Kreis Euskirchen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Trutzburg stands in Gemünd, a district of the town of Schleiden in the Kreis Euskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite its name, it is not a fortress but a townhouse built in 1618 for the ironworks master Dietrich Reinhard Günther, later nicknamed Trutzburg by a neighbouring nobleman. The building survived the heavy destruction that hit most of Gemünd during the Second World War and remains one of the oldest houses in the town. Its most notable feature is the wide round arched gateway leading into the courtyard, carved with the builder's and his wife's initials and the date 1619.

What to know

  • The Trutzburg is a historic house rather than a castle, best seen from the outside while walking through Gemünd.
  • The building is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • No visiting hours or admission fees are published, as the interior was converted for modern residential use.
  • The main interest lies in the facade, particularly the round arched gateway dated 1619 on Bergstraße.
