To make a day of it
Schwedenschanze (Kelsterbach) stands in Kelsterbach (Landkreis Groß-Gerau), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Schwedenschanze in Kelsterbach is the surviving earthwork of a circular rampart built in the early Middle Ages, likely between the 8th and 10th centuries, on the edge of the Kelsterbach terrace at about 100 metres above sea level. Despite its name, which evokes Swedish troops of the Thirty Years' War, it has no real connection to them, a longstanding misconception tied to the supposed shelling of the nearby Wolfenburg manor. It was in fact a refuge fortification used by local inhabitants in times of danger, its oval enclosure measuring roughly 55 by 40 metres at the rampart crest. Today visitors find a grassy oval embankment with no standing structures, since the original defences and buildings were made of wood.
What to know
- The site lies about 850 metres north of Kelsterbach's town centre, along the Kirschenallee, near the municipal swimming pool.
- It is an open outdoor site with no building or ticket booth, and a visit simply means walking around the grassy rampart and enclosure.
- The earthwork is protected as a Kulturdenkmal, so any research or collecting of finds requires authorisation, and chance finds must be reported to the heritage authorities.
- The current western access path dates from an 1860 modification, when the interior was used for choral and gymnastics festivals.
- There are no opening hours or admission fees, as the site can be visited outdoors at any time.
