To make a day of it

Schloss Vöhl stands in Vöhl (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Vöhl, in Vöhl, in the Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse, no longer stands as a building: this medieval residence, enlarged in Baroque style during the 17th century, was torn down in 1845 after falling into disrepair. Only scattered remnants survive today in the castle park, the Schlosspark, such as a fountain bearing a landgrave's and his wife's initials, a small tower embedded in a remaining stretch of wall, and a carved coat-of-arms stone. Stones from the old complex were reused to build several village buildings, including today's town hall. A visit here means walking through a park layered with history rather than touring an intact monument.

What to know

  • There is no castle building to visit in the usual sense, only scattered remains within the Schlosspark.
  • Access to the park is free and unrestricted, as it is an open public green space with no set hours or ticket.
  • Look for a heraldic fountain, a small tower set into a surviving wall fragment, and a carved coat-of-arms stone, all within the park.
  • Vöhl's town hall and a few other village buildings were built using stones from the demolished castle, making them a worthwhile addition to a visit.
  • The park hosts a local festival, the Schlossparkfest, every year at the end of June.
