To make a day of it

Höckelsburg stands in Herzhausen (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Höckelsburg is not a castle in the usual sense but the remains of a fortified earthwork on a wooded hilltop north of Herzhausen, in the Kellerwald. The structure is thought to date from the early La Tène period, around 500 BC, and to have been destroyed by the Chatti roughly a century before the Christian era. A surviving rampart of about forty metres, built of greywacke stone and timber, once blocked the approach from the north; parts of it were fused by fire during its destruction. Today the site is reached on foot through the forest, with no visitor facilities on location.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains, only an earthen and stone rampart within the forest.
  • Access is on foot from a parking area along the B 252, via an uphill forest track.
  • The site lies in the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park, about 1.5 km north-northwest of Herzhausen.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, as it is an open-air site freely accessible.
  • It should not be confused with the Hünselburg, another supposed Celtic earthwork about 7.4 km to the southeast.
