Schloss Vitzenburg stands on a rocky spur above the Unstrut valley, on the site of a stronghold first recorded at the end of the 9th century. The present building, combining Renaissance and neo-Renaissance elements, follows a long succession of uses: a convent for women founded before 991, then a monastery for monks under Wiprecht of Groitzsch around the turn of the 12th century. The place thus carried in turn a Carolingian stronghold, an imperial abbey and finally a noble residence.
