To make a day of it

Schloss Oberschwappach stands in Knetzgau (Landkreis Haßberge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Oberschwappach stands in Knetzgau, in the Landkreis Haßberge, Bavaria, as a well preserved example of eighteenth century Baroque design. Built between 1733 and 1738 for the Cistercian abbey of Ebrach, it served as the administrative seat of its Saint Gangolf estate and as a summer retreat for the abbots. The tall mansard roofs of its pavilions reflect the French influence carried through plans drawn up by a Würzburg court architect. Visitors today can see a mirrored hall, a chapel and a museum devoted to local history and sacred art.

What to know

  • Part of the building also houses a restaurant and a kindergarten, which are not open to visitors.
  • The museum displays a collection on local history alongside pieces of sacred art.
  • The state rooms, including the mirrored hall and the chapel, can be viewed separately from the museum.
  • A Christmas market takes place at the end of November and a wine festival at the end of July on the castle grounds.
  • The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
