To make a day of it

Schloss Neuwied stands in Neuwied (Landkreis Neuwied), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Neuwied stands at the northern edge of Neuwied's town centre, close to the Rhine bank, just south of where the Wied river flows into it. Seat of the counts and later princes of Wied until 1806, it replaced the older family residence of Burg Altwied, which had become unsuitable for a princely court. The present building, an open three-wing complex facing the town, follows the horseshoe layout fashionable in German Baroque architecture after the model of Versailles. Around it lies a park laid out in 1715 as a formal French garden and later reshaped into an English landscape garden, planted with exotic species linked to Prince Maximilian zu Wied's travels in America.

What to know

  • The palace sits in the heart of Neuwied, right by the Rhine.
  • The surrounding park, reshaped into a landscape garden in the 18th and 19th centuries, covers around twenty hectares down to the mouth of the Wied river.
  • The site is protected as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • No verified information is available here regarding opening hours, admission fees, or interior visiting arrangements.
