Schloss Lichtenberg stands in the Fischbachtal valley on the site of a medieval fortress first documented under the counts of Katzenelnbogen in the 13th century. From 1570, master stonemason Jakob Kesselhut converted the stronghold into a Renaissance-style residence for Landgrave Georg I of Hesse-Darmstadt, the earliest such building in southern Hesse. Remnants of the older structure, including the eastern wall and traces of medieval window openings inside the chapel, can still be seen, along with the defensive bastion added in 1503.
