To make a day of it
Schloss Alsbach stands in Alsbach-Hähnlein (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Alsbach stands above the village of Alsbach-Hähnlein on a wooded ridge of the Odenwald, along the Hessian Bergstraße. Built around 1235 by the lords of Bickenbach under the name Burg Bickenbach, it was conceived as a defensive stronghold rather than a residence, and survives today only as a ruin. Its restored round keep, over nineteen metres tall, can be climbed and rewards visitors with views across the Rhine plain toward the Taunus and the Palatinate Forest on clear days.
What to know
- Reaching the top of the keep involves a stone staircase followed by a wooden footbridge to the tower entrance, then an internal spiral staircase.
- The site is an open-air ruin with no enclosed building to tour, suited to an outdoor stop.
- The stronghold sits on a hill roughly 260 metres high, meaning a steady climb up from the village.
- The monument is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
- Events such as a Pentecost arts and crafts market and medieval-themed festivals are regularly held on site.
