To make a day of it

Schloss Kellersberg stands in Alsdorf (Städteregion Aachen), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Kellersberg stood at Alsdorf, in the Städteregion Aachen district, North Rhine-Westphalia, until it burned down completely in 1897. It was a moated, four-winged brick castle built in the second half of the 17th century, with two projecting square corner towers topped by slate-covered lanterns. The western wing housed the main residential building, two storeys high with large stone-framed windows, and a castle chapel is documented in historical records. The building was never rebuilt; the only surviving element is a coat-of-arms stone dated 1724, now set into the gate wall of the neighbouring Kellersberger Hof farmstead.

What to know

  • The castle no longer exists since the 1897 fire, so there is no standing building to visit on site.
  • The location now corresponds to the southern edge of the Kellersberg district, occupied by the Kellersberger Hof farmstead and a forester's house.
  • The only visible remnant is a coat-of-arms stone dated 1724, set into the entrance wall of the Kellersberger Hof.
  • From 1906 onward, the site was used by the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein mining company to build a workers' housing settlement.
