Schloss Gesmold stands in the Melle district of Gesmold in Lower Saxony, close to the A30 motorway. Its core is a square residential tower dating from the 12th century, extended into a Renaissance manor between 1544 and 1559 under the von Amelunxen family. The complex still has its two outer baileys, its moats and a baroque gatehouse, along with gardens later reshaped in the English style after an earlier French layout. Four statues of the evangelists still crown the tower, a reminder of the period when the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück owned the estate.
