To make a day of it
Schloss Friedersdorf stands in Neusalza-Spremberg (Landkreis Görlitz), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Schloss Friedersdorf stands in the Friedersdorf district of Neusalza-Spremberg, close to the Spreepark leisure area. Built between 1887 and 1889 for the Royal Saxon chamberlain Hans Leo von Oppell to designs by the Dresden architect Heinrich Schubert, it displays a neo-baroque style with rococo decorative touches, a strictly symmetrical facade and a sandstone portal topped by two obelisks. The estate replaced an earlier timber-framed manor house that itself grew out of a medieval moated residence first recorded in 1392. The building now functions as a care home and is not generally accessible as a visitor site.
What to know
- The Schloss now houses a residential care home, so there is no regular interior visit.
- Documents and memorabilia of the von Oppell family are kept on the second floor, with no guaranteed public access.
- The exterior, with its neo-baroque facade and garden-side terrace, can be viewed from the grounds near the Spreepark.
- A modern wing was added on the north side between 2004 and 2005, visually distinct from the historic building.
- The building is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Saxony.
