Schloss Althörnitz stands in Bertsdorf-Hörnitz, Saxony, a 17th century building whose entrance is flanked by two octagonal towers with bell shaped roofs. The older of the two towers, its ground floor covered by a cross vault, is linked to alchemical experiments carried out there by the builder's son together with Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus, a figure connected with the origins of Meissen porcelain. Passed through several owners and expropriated after the Second World War, the estate served for decades as a holiday site for East German trade unions before being restored in the 1990s. It now operates as a hotel, set within a landscaped park laid out by a pupil of Pückler.
